Wayne R. Hogue, 74, of Seneca, a well-known Tippery resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at UPMC Hamot in Erie early Sunday evening, July 23, 2023.
Wayne was born in Oil City on September 14, 1948. He was the son of the late Charles E. and Grace Croop Hogue.
He was a 1968 graduate of Cranberry High School and had earned an associate’s degree as a licensed journeyman. In his earlier years, Wayne had been employed by the glass plant in Oil City and retired from Range Resources in Cochranton.
Wayne was an Army National Guard veteran, where he had served in the infantry division and was an excellent marksman. He was avid hunter and fisherman and a loyal Steelers fan. He was a member of the Fryburg Sportsman’s Club and supported many local fire departments’ gun raffles. In his younger days, Wayne attended meat shoots at the Isaac Walton. He enjoyed mowing and taking meticulous care of his yard, playing cards, watching westerns, especially John Wayne movies and the company of family and friends. Wayne’s favorite time of year was Christmas, where many children were convinced he might be “Santa Clause”. He loved decorating his home with lights and people would drive from miles around to view his home.
He is survived by his wife, Susan E. Steck Hogue, whom he married at St. Stephen Church in Oil City on March 15, 1969. Also surviving are three daughters, Christine M. Cozad and her husband, Jason, Melissa A. Hogue and Amanda S. Hogue, all of Seneca; six grandchildren, Jillian Kutchravy, Jacob Cozad, Katelyne Dittman (Jacob), Kyle Lam, (Samantha), Joshua Lam (Alexandra), and Gage Golden; six great grandchildren, Xander Stuart, Karson Lam, Beckett Dittman, Charlie Lam, Berkley Dittman and Harper Lam; a sister, Kathy Johnson and her husband, Michael, of Venus; a sister-in-law, Trudy Hogue of Venus, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousin, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary and Richard Hogue; two sisters, Pauline Hogue and Carol McCartney and her husband, Donald, and an infant grandson, Jared Cozad.
Friends will be received at the Hile-Best Funeral Home Inc., 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Twp., from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday (July 29), where a funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Deborah Ackley-Killian, a United Methodist pastor and family friend, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by members of the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard at the funeral home Saturday at 1:45 p.m. Private interment will be in Heckethorn Cemetery at a later date.
The family requests that Wayne’s Tippery friends and neighbors place a luminary in Wayne’s yard on Saturday evening to “give Wayne a little bit of Christmas back.” Memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org
