Joan J. Reed, 89, of Oil City, passed away at UPMC Northwest in Seneca on Tuesday evening, February 18, 2025, following a brief illness.
She was born in St. Marys, West Virginia on October 26, 1935 to the late Herman L. and Pearl O. (Moore) Smith.
She was a 1953 graduate of St. Marys High School. In her early years she enjoyed bowling leagues. Joan was a member of the Red Hat Society, and volunteered at the Franklin Hospital.
She was a former member of St. Marys United Methodist Church, and a current member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Oil City.
Joan enjoyed reading, flowers, camping, and watching her grandchildren participate in sports and band. She enjoyed life and the people around her, always wearing a smile.
In West Virginia, she worked at People News and the Dollar General. Joan also worked at the B. Dalton book store in the Cranberry Mall, as well as the gift shop at UPMC Northwest Hospital.
She was married in St. Marys on June 23, 1957 to Walter Lawrence Reed, and he preceded her in death on February 14, 2022.
She is survived by five children: Cynthia Kline of Charleston, West Virginia, Walter "Tom" Reed II and wife Terri of Lexington, South Carolina, Paul Reed and wife Brenda of Newport, Ohio, Julia Huff and husband Buddy of Franklin, and Timothy Reed and wife Kimberly of Oil City; seven grandchildren: John Hunter Kline (Mary), Ashley Hess (Brian), Erica Pierce (Zachary), Danny Edward Reed (Amy), Alex Jordan Huff (Hannah), Chelsea Johnson, and Quinton Reed (Hanna); and thirteen great-grandchildren: Olivia and Hunter Kline, Dylan and Maddie Hess, Myles, Ethan, and Eleanor Pierce, Paul Reed, Baylor Huff, Luka, Rowan Johnson, and Emsley and Willa Reed.
Also surviving are two sisters, Joyce Miller and husband John, and Jeri Williams and husband Tim; numerous nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law Teresa Thompson and husband Michael; and two brothers-in-law, Michael Brady and Francis "Junior" Farnsworth.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Bradley Thomas Reed; a son-in-law, James Kline; her siblings: Stanley Smith, Janice Cornell, Judy Cunningham, Jean Smith, June Brady, and Jane Farnsworth; a brother-in-law, Gary Reed; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Iva Reed.
A private visitation will be held for the immediate family and close friends. Interment will be made in the Franklin Cemetery.
