Bartlett "Bart" Haugh Obituary

Bartlett Earl Haugh (Bart) was born on March 28, 1932, to Earl O. and Gladys Pollum Haugh in Brookville PA. He was one of five kids and was preceded in death by his three sisters: his two older sisters Opal O’Grady and Grace Ongley, and younger sister Millie Barker. He is survived by his only brother Gary Haugh. Bart was born during a time in this country were rising in or from the social class you were born was extremely difficult. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade, where he went to work on various oil leases throughout NW PA alongside his father. He once said that they lived so far out in the woods near Grand Valley, PA that they had to pipe in the sunshine.

He continued various jobs until the Korean War, where he and some friends felt compelled to enlist. He served in the US Army Airborne Rangers, 75th Ranger Regiment from Ft. Benning, Georgia. In Korea, Bart was assigned to the 702nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion as a combat medic. Combat medics of this era had no weapons. He only had his medical bag and his sleeve band and helmet with a red cross designating him as a non-combatant. During a very brutal battle for “Bloody Ridge,” Bart and his litter mate had made seven trips up the hill bringing back the wounded and dying to the battalion HQ triage area. On the eighth trip up the ridge, they were hit with a barrage of machine gun fire severely wounding him and killing his litter mate. Bart was brought back to the stateside where he underwent the next 1-1/2 years in therapy and undergoing several surgeries to repair the damage from the inflicted wounds. This was just one instance of many that guardian angels were looking out for him.

After returning home from the service, Bart went back to work. He met his wife, Margie, while she was working at the Arcade Restaurant in Titusville, PA. After a short courtship Bart married Margie J. McKinney on July 31st, 1954, in Centerville, PA. They were married for 63 years at her passing. Bart was blessed with three sons, Edward, Roger, and Robert, and one daughter, Gail Ann. He was also blessed with eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Bart was preceded in death by his wife Margie, his parents Earl and Gladys, his daughter Gail Ann, and a granddaughter and grandson.

Bart owned the City Delivery in Oil City, PA and operated that until being hired as a truck driver with Lyons Transportation Lines. He drove semis for Lyons for 28 years, retiring when they went out of business in 1990. In 1997, Margie and Bart moved to Oklahoma to help Robert take care of his three boys while working and attending school. Bart and Margie were active members at Common Ground Church, where they found joy serving their community and the Lord.
