Libby, my heart goes out to you. I was deeply saddened to hear about Bruce passing. He was a good friend since we were dorm roommates during our college sophomore years in Seattle. He was athletic (much better than me at handball!) and amazingly strong from working summers at his family's fish farm, loved cycling, music, cars, and studying insects. He always wanted to do the right thing and was serious about his studies but enjoyed a good time. We both loved cycling out to Green Lake and Lake Washington. In fact, just before graduation, we went on a bike trip to the San Juan Islands (a scenic and hilly island archipelago in Washington between Seattle and Vancouver, BC). To save money, for several days we lived off of sandwiches that Bruce had gotten from the dorm. One night outside of Vancouver, we looked for a campground, but Bruce didn't want to pay for a spot, so we slept on the ground outside it. My watch froze overnight, so we couldn't tell the time and started riding at 4:30 AM; we did more than 110 miles that day. During college, he developed an interest in stereo equipment, and was probably the only guy with a high end Teac reel-to-reel tape deck in his dorm room. After college, Bruce continued his interest in cars, buying a Datsun 260Z that he once drove out to Seattle to visit. He also did a complete restoration himself of a Datsun 2000 roadster. He was serious about his mountain biking, even in the winter snow, which always amazed me. Libby, I especially enjoyed going with you and Bruce on those three bike trips in Italy, New Zealand, and the Williamsburg area of Virginia. One strong memory I have of the New Zealand trip is how Bruce loved to charge ahead to try to beat everyone else to the destination, and he'd always ride in with that enormous grin on his face. You're in my thoughts, Libby.

So sorry to hear of your loss! Bruce was a high school classmate. He sat behind me in almost every class—where seating charts were set up alphabetically! We played in band together. What a joy to see how much he valued that experience—and what a sweet trumpet he played. In those days Bruce came over to our house every now and then for a get to. We all liked Bruce and knew how hard he worked at the family business—getting up hours before any of us ever did. I am sorry we lost touch over the years. I would love to have heard about those cycling adventures!

Bruce was a friend of mine as a young man in Junior and Senior High School. He was the most hard-working and diligent boy in our class, true to his best instincts for science and the natural world, true to what matters most in life. He cared deeply about being kind, telling the truth, and doing the right thing. Those of you who loved him will for sure miss him deeply. May he rest in peace! My sincere condolence.
