Vernal E. "Vern" Dunmire, Jr., 71, of Franklin, died late Friday night, January 26, 2018 at his home, surrounded by loved ones.

He was born September 17, 1946 in Oil City to the late Vernal E. Dunmire, Sr. and Margaret (Whitsell) Dunmire.

Mr. Dunmire served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

He and his wife attended the Lupher Chapel United Methodist Church near Utica.

Vern enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, playing the lottery, and working on automobiles. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was employed as a molder for Amcast Forge in Meadville, and also worked for Patterson's Auto Wrecking in Cochranton.

Vern was married in Oil City on July 11, 1970 to the former Dixie M. Hazlett, and she survives.

Also surviving are two children: Tina Long and her husband Greg of Rocky Grove, and Vernal E. Dunmire, III and his wife Stacy of Cochranton; four grandsons: Donald Dunmire and his girlfriend Kristen, Cody Dunmire and his girlfriend Autumn, Caleb Peterson, and Caiden Dunmire; and five great-grandchildren: Payden, Dustin, and Tanner Dunmire, and Troy and Travis Uber.

He is also survived by his brother, Robert Dunmire and his wife Ella of Venus; three sisters, Judy Bunnell of Oil City, Carolyn Clark and her husband Terry of Venus, and Kathy Trogdon of North Carolina; his mother-in-law, Violet Karns of Sugarcreek; a sister-in-law, Sally O'Neil; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Madison Dunmire; a sister, Donna Lee Dunmire; his father-in-law, George Hazlett; his step father-in-law, Dean Karns; and a brother-in-law, Richard O'Neil.

Friends and family will be received Tuesday (Jan. 30) from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home Wednesday  (Jan. 31) at 12 noon, officiated by Rev. Karen Kostur, pastor at Lupher Chapel, officiating. Following the funeral service, the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard will accord full military honors at the funeral home.

Private interment will follow in the Franklin Cemetery.
